Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Don’t even buy popcorn unless you are planning on polishing it off before the credits begin to roll on this movie because if you are distracted for a second you will miss something crucial.  “Inception” was the only movie that came out this season that was tighter than “Tinker, Tailor , Soldier, Spy”.  Every wink, nod, and side glance has a meaning, and the end shot with the main character rubbing his temples – that’s a soliloquy, and there isn’t a soul who won’t identify with it.

M16 is trying to ferret out a mole that is turning western secrets over to the Russians, and they decide to use a man who throws around words like manhole covers to do the investigation.  You’ll love the behind the scenes look at how a spy lives – frugally and yet very well.  This movie doesn’t provide James Bond thrills and chills, but it does give your mind an Olympic sized work out, and a challenge to solve the mystery.  I didn’t read the book, but I heard so much about this movie I could not resist and I was not disappointed.

This movie does have a few violent scenes but they are not gratuitous, and they move the storyline along.  The role of friendship plays a big part in the movie, and of course, as with all spy movies – loyalty is the key to it all.  You will definitely identify with the main character and you are pulling for M16 to find it’s mole, you are pulling for some sense of loyalty from somewhere, and you are hoping that the main character can get to the point where he enters his house without sending in a search party. This movie is a contender for Best Picture at Oscar time in my mind – I recommend it highly.
